Google taking over the world? They are the big brother you never had
Let me say at the outset that I truly admire Google as a company. They have been the engine of Web 2.0 which has positively transformed the way we do business and connect with people.
Google’s proposed power meter service will probably be a good service for individuals wanting to manage their electricity use. Home thermostats do this now in a fashion which would be greatly enhanced by the devices and software Google proposes to develop. But isn’t this just a free-market way to give governments like California the opportunity to more easily take over the system to meet the dictates of a government bureaucrat? I don’t know the answer to that question, but knowing the political view of Google’s corporate leadership, it wouldn’t be surprising if they worked out such deals with government agencies (with appropriate “privacy”, of course).
